Snap out of Social Anxiety with these 3 Power Poses

It was too late, I had missed the quick draw and now my anxiety was about to take off. I was already stuck inside my head and was starting to talk myself out of the whole ordeal. She doesn’t look like she wants to meet anyone, she seems kinda bitchy etc. But then I snapped out of it. I sat upright, I shook it off and I rationalized it. If she didn’t want to meet anybody, why was she even out? Girls don’t get dressed up and go out to be alone. They could do that at home in their PJ’s. This was just my preservation instinct kicking in, and for the first time, I knew how to break its momentum.

According to researchers such at Gotway and Cuddy, your body posture directly affects your mood, positivity and self image. In numerous studies, when participants were put into negative body postures (head slumped, legs crossed, eyes down) their sense of helplessness increased, as did their negativity and depressiveness.

However, when they put the same participants in positive body postures (head up, chest out, smiling) their self confidence improved as did their overall sense of wellness and positivity. Switching from a negative to a positive posture is called a circuit breaker because it breaks the momentum of your negative anxious thoughts.

It seems as though the best postures for increasing your confidence and self perceptions are the army sergeant (wide stance, chest out, head up), the victory salute (both arms overhead in a victorious pose) and the kings throne (leaning back in your chair, feet wide, chest and head up). For more on how your body postures effect your mood, check out this awesome TED Talk by Amy Cuddy.

I stood up, smiled, stuck my chest out and started to get curious about her (stay tuned for an article dedicated to the social power of curiosity). I took a few big confident strides and by the time I reached her I felt great. I said hello, introduced myself and before I knew it we were joking about cat food (long story).

This simple technique can be used at any time and in any scenario. Whether you’re anxious about a job interview, a date or a family bbq, a circuit breaker can help get you back into a positive, confident, creative mindset.
